CA Could Pay Business Not to Use Power
LCG, June 18, 2002--A new initiative is expected today, which suggests paying businesses who reduce their electricity usage during peak demand. The State of California Demand Reserves Partnership is an attempt to prevent blackouts through conservation by allowing as much as $50 million to go to participating businesses.Businesses would consent to limit electricity use during peak demand beforehand and would subsequently be monetarily compensated for yielding "immediately verifiable" capacity up for redistribution.APX Inc., which expects to receive $2 million annually for running the program, says that such a move can be implemented "almost overnight," and that Ohio is also considering a similar program. While the program might free up electricity during peak demand, the state has not been facing the threat of blackouts recently and saw several new plants come on line this year already.
