U.S. Senate May Subpoena White House for Energy Documents Again

LCG, June 24, 2002--The U.S. Senate Environment Committee plans to vote on Thursday whether or not to subpoena the White House for air pollution documents.

Vermont Senator James Jeffords (Indep.) contests the Bush Administration's "new source review," which sets new regulations for aging coal-fired plants and refineries. He is chairing the Senate Environmental committee, which is trying to investigate Environmental Protection Agency records relating to policy discussions with outside interest groups.

On Thursday, the Committee will vote on whether or not to issue subpoenas to the White House; a vote calling to subpoena the White House will be the second order to the White House to release energy documents this year.

According to the Washington Post, the EPA sent the Committee 700 pages of mostly blank, unusable, or "incomprehensible" documents in May.

The Committee will also vote on stricter limits to plant emissions by 2008, including mandatory limits on carbon dioxide emissions. Carbon dioxide limits are not supported by the Bush administration, despite widely accepted scientific evidence linking emissions to global warming.
