CFTC Investigates Portland General Electric

LCG, June 25, 2002-The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission has asked Oregon utility Portland General Electric Co. for electricity trading documents.

Portland General Electric is one of four companies that face threats from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to revoke their trading licenses. FERC contended that the utility did not provide sufficient information regarding its energy trading practices as ordered earlier this year.

PGE admits that four of its trades partially follow the "wash trade" pattern, as defined by FERC.

The utility also asserted that is complying with FERC and the CFTC and will send documents as requested.

PGE is a subsidiary of Enron and was bought by the corporation in 1997 in order to bring Enron into the Pacific Northwest electricity market. The utility serves 736,000 in Oregon.
