Safety Lapse at Washington Nuke

LCG, June 28, 2002--Energy Northwest's Columbia Generating Station received a citation from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for neglecting to properly maintain safety-related equipment.

Energy Northwest installed 22 circuit breakers which NRC said are related to safety, and parts in the breakers failed, resulting in inoperative equipment four times between June 2001 and February 2002.

NRC said that the part, the mechanism-operated cell switch, should have been maintained and issued a Notice of Violation for failure to fix the breakers quickly and for failure to make sure the breakers would operate adequately.

The one-unit nuclear plant is located near Richland, Washington and provides electricity to the Bonneville Power Administration. Within 30 days, Energy Northwest must report to NRC corrective actions it will take.
