Long Island Plant's Capacity Boosted

LCG, July 1, 2002--The Long Island-based Bethpage power plant owned by Calpine is able to produce 48 additional megawatts after an upgrade, bringing its overall capacity to over 100 megawatts.

The new capacity is under contract to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) for three-and-a-half years, according to Calpine. Bethpage is located in west-central Long Island, and provides electricity and steam to an adjacent Northrup Grumman Corporation facility. Before the addition of capacity, only surplus electricity not used by Grumman had been sold under agreement to LIPA.
