Cross-County Cable Back in Service in New York State

LCG, July 1, 2002--An 18-mile cable linking substations in New York state's Westchester and Nassau Counties that failed over a month ago has been restored to service.

The cable is currently rated at 400 megawatts, in order not to risk another failure. The Y-50 cable had been rated at 600 megawatts before a section running beneath Long Island Sound cut transmission on May 18.

Long Island Power Authority will be able to withdraw 250 megawatts at Glenwood Landing, while Consolidated Edison's Queen service area will be entitled to 150 megawatts. The repairs to the cable were finished three weeks earlier than had been anticipated.
