Rhode Island Combined-Cycle Near Completion

LCG, July 5, 2002--A combined-cycle generating plant now under construction in Johnston, R.I., should be ready to sell its output to the grid in the fourth quarter, according to developer FPL Energy, LLC.

The 535-megawatt Johnston plant, which is to run on natural gas, was originally planned by then-Houston Industries (now Reliant Energy) four years ago for operation in 2001. Since then, FPL Energy has taken over the project, and has announced the completion of $425 million in financing.

Production by the plant will be divided between contract and merchant sales within the New England Power Pool (NEPOOL).
