Transformer Explosion Causes Fire At Georgia Plant
LCG, July 12, 2002--Thursday night saw thousands of gallons of oil catch fire at the McDonough plant near Smyrna, Georgia. The fire resulted in no injuries and firefighters were able to extinguish it, but some oil ended up in the Chattahoochee River and smoke could be seen for miles around the Atlanta suburb.According to Southern Co. unit Georgia Power, which owns the plant, a transformer exploded and spilled some 5,500 gallons of mineral oil on a switchyard. The company has apparently employed a boom in the river and placed pads on drains and other parts of the plant to minimize further contamination of the river.A Hazardous Materials crew will attempt to remove as much as 200 gallons of oil from the Chattahoochee.
