Indiana Plant Starts Operations

LCG, July 19, 2002--The Sugar Creek generating plant, developed by Mirant near Terre Haute, Ind., has started operations, according to the company.

The part of the plant now operating is considered the first of two planned phases. Currently, Sugar Creek will operate as a peaking facility, providing 300 megawatts during times of heavy demand. A second, 259-megawatt combined-cycle phase, planned for summer 2003, will reportedly follow.

Randy Harrison, senior vice president, said, "Mirant plans to add approximately 1,500 megawatts of electricity generation in North America this year. The addition of Sugar Creek to our North American generation fleet is another important step towards meeting that milestone, and providing the U.S. with reliable and efficient power."
