LCG, June 23, 2025--The Governor of New York today directed the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to develop and construct an advanced nuclear power plant in upstate New York to deliver zero-emission power that supports a reliable and affordable electric grid. NYPA will lead the effort to develop at least one new nuclear energy facility with a combined capacity of at least one gigawatt (GW) of electricity, either alone or in partnership with private entities. The directive builds on the Governor’s 2025 State of the State to develop nuclear energy plans in New York.

Bush Signs Yucca Mountain Bill
LCG, July 23, 2002-Today President Bush made the Yucca Mountain into a national nuclear waste dumpsite, signing the bill regardless of considerable protest from Nevadans.Yucca Mountain has been considered a possible repository for the nation's high level radioactive waste for over twenty years.Some Nevada residents and environmentalists contend it has been the only site seriously considered and researched in that time.In any case and despite a visit to the nation's capital by Nevada's governor, plans are to open the site by 2010. Nevada filed a formal protest earlier this year after President Bush announced his support for it, but both the U.S. Congress and Senate voted to utilize the site.Yucca Mountain will accept some pre-existing 77,000 tons of radioactive waste, which is currently stored in 39 states across the country.Opponents have cited safety concerns regarding the transportation of high level radioactive waste, although Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham has insisted that strict safety measures will ensure acts of terrorism or accidents will be avoided.
