Southern California Gas Pipeline Projects Add Capacity

LCG, Aug. 1, 2002--Up to five additional gas-fired power plants will be able to operate using gas from pipeline projects completed by Southern California Gas Co. this year.

The four projects were developed intrastate, and expand the Southern California overall natural gas capacity by 11 percent, or 375 million cubic feet (MMcf) per day.

The Kramer Junction project began April 1, averaging 166 MMcf out of a possible 200 MMcf in daily deliveries. It uses gas from the Kern-Mojave pipeline, delivering gas from the Rocky Mountain area.

A compressor station expansion took place at Wheeler Ridge, linking the station to as many as 85 MMcf of supplies from Western Canada, Elk Hills, the Rocky Mountains and the San Juan Basin in New Mexico and southern Colorado.

At North Needles, two new compressors provided 50 MMcf of capacity, with supplies from Transwestern Pipeline Co. and Questar's Southern Trails pipeline.

The newest addition to the system started operating this week at Sylmar Station, where supplies from the San Joaquin valley account for up to 40 MMcf daily.

Southern California Gas Co. is the largest natural gas distribution utility in the country, with 18 million consumers. It is part of Sempra Energy Utilities, under which Sempra Energy's regulated business units operate.
