Five Wind Farms Planned in New York State

LCG, Aug. 22, 2002--A group of five wind farms will be built in western New York state, in Erie, Chautauqua, Lewis, Steuben, and Yates counties.

The wind farm in Erie County, which will be sited on land leased from landowners, will have a capacity of 50 megawatts. "It's a new crop which many farmers are glad to have on their land," said Patrick Doyle, director of project development for Zilkha. The project cost is estimated at $50 million for 34 planned turbine towers. Zilkha also operates wind farms in California, Pennsylvania and Iowa.

Another project will be built by York WindPower. This project will have a capacity of 51 megawatts, and be sited in Chautauqua County.

The five projects, which together would be able to produce up to 315 megawatts at their maximum output, are expected to be built within the next year. $17 million in grants are being provided through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, and will bring the state closer to its goal of obtaining 10 percent of its generation from renewable sources.

Other wind farms in upstate New York that are already running can be found in Madison County, and have a capacity of 41 megawatts.
