Texas PUC Approves Rate Increases for Fuel
LCG, Aug. 23, 2002--Texas' Public Utility Commission today allowed major retail power sellers in the state to increase their rates, based on higher natural gas prices. The amount of the average increase for a customer of TXU Corp., Reliant Resources Inc. or American Electric Power Co. will be $4 a month, according to a company spokesman, Chris Schein. The rate cases cited higher natural gas costs incurred by the companies. While retail power rates in Texas are largely fixed until 2006, the fuel component is allowed to trigger rate increases up to twice annually, based on rules governing deregulation in the state. When the rate increase was first sought, the Public Utility Commission did not immediately consider the applications by the three utilities. Two weeks ago, however, a judge issued an injunctive order to permit an increase unless the PUC found the case was not justified.
