UK Grid Narrowly Avoids Brownout
LCG, Dec. 10, 2002--Late Tuesday evening, the U.K.'s National Grid Transco PLC broadcast an order to local line operators to reduce the amount of power they were able to distribute, marking the first time in years that such a warning has become necessary. An industry source reached by the Wall Street Journal said that 300 megawatts of capacity was available for a brief time to keep the grid operating. According to the source, the peak demand experienced was 200 megawatts greater than forecasts. Almost every plant available to meet the load, which peaked at 54.4 gigawatts, was connected to the grid.Following National Grid's "demand control imminent" warning by 40 minutes, another announcement signalled that demand might have to be reduced. The peak demand experienced during this week has set records, due to below-average temperatures and high winds. Discussion has arisen in recent weeks over the possibility that low power prices have prompted so many U.K. plants to be mothballed that reserves are lower than it might first appear.
