China to Officially Dismantle National Energy December 29

LCG, December 18, 2002-Chinese officials will conduct a ceremony on December 29 to mark the decentralization of China's electricity assets.

In April, Chinese Officials announced that the State Power Corporation, which controls over half of Chinese electricity generation and all of the transmission, would be split into several smaller companies. Now China has set an official date to the breakup.

The state transmission assets will be under the control of two companies. The southern transmission company will be responsible for Guizhou, Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Yunnan provinces, while the northern transmission company will be responsible for all other provinces.

All of the generation assets will be split between five new companies. Each of those companies will have a unit made up of one of the following already existing companies: Beijing Datang Power Generation Company, Shandong International Power Development, SP Power Development, China Power Holdings, and Huaneng Power International. These companies will serve as fundraising units.

December 29 will also mark the creation of a new government body, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
