Ontario Asks Consumers to Lower Power Usage
LCG, Mar. 3, 2003--A bout of record-setting, low temperatures in the Canadian province of Ontario has led the Independent Electricity Market Operator (IMO) to seek lower power usage by consumers and commercial enterprises. The request was made on Monday, and extends through 8 P.M. in the evening. The grid operator is issuing the plea due to low levels of reserve power made worse by the weather. If levels fall too low, the IMO might have to implement local blackouts, or risk instability of the transmission network, which could lead to loss of power throughout the system.
