Senate Energy Committee Puts Nuclear Assistance into Energy Bill

LCG, Apr. 11, 2003--As much as $30 billion worth of loan guarantees for the building of six new nuclear power plants producing 8,400 megawatts were approved by the Senate Energy Committee as part of a broader energy bill yesterday.

Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., has already indicated that he believes nuclear power is an important part of the nation's energy portfolio. "This committee is no longer frightened to death with the notion of nuclear power," Domenici, the chairman of the committee, said. The loan guarantees, for which no specific amount was given, would cover half of the cost of individual plants, estimated by lawmakers at $10 billion apiece.

The private insurance industry has not offered coverage for the full amount of claims that could be incurred following an accident at a nuclear plant. The Senate Energy Committee also voted to prolong for the foreseeable future coverage provided the government for claims over $9.3 billion.

"Nuclear power is a mature technology today," said Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M. "I can't see a justification for the taxpayer picking up such a substantial portion of these costs."
