Las Vegas-Area Plant Near Operation

LCG, Jan. 27, 2003--Testing is underway at a new 533-megawatt power plant built by Mirant Corp. in an industrial area of Las Vegas, Apex.

The gas-fired, combined-cycle faciity is expected to produce power in early April, and will use minimal water for cooling (30 gallons per minute), relying primarily on air. Mirant has planned from the beginning of the project to install a second phase at the Apex Generating Station of approximately the same size as the first, but has not said when it might begin construction.

Output from Apex will be sold under contract, although the company is still working to sign deals for the plant's capacity. Another project scheduled to open in the fall is Reliant Energy's Primm plant, a 550-megawatt facility.
