French Electricity Prices Suggest Pending Strike

LCG, May 27, 2003-French power unions are going to strike on June third, an action that may seriously limit the country's electricity capacity.

Prices already reflect increases from summer demand and lack of rainfall, but prices for peak demand power went up even more after the announcement of the strike.

Peak electricity for week 23 went for 38/40 euros. Today June baseload sold at a maximum of 22.45 euros, ending at 22.15/22.45 today, an increase from yesteday's 21.65 euros.

Workers are conducting the strike regarding pension reforms. Currently issues of privatization are also sparking discord in France.
