Sempra Gets Approval to Build First LNG Plant in 25 Years

LCG, September 11, 2003The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission gave Sempra Energy unanimous approval to begin constructing a $700 million liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Louisiana.

The Hackberry plant will be the first LNG plant constructed in the United States in 25 years. LNG is becoming an increasingly viable option as natural gas prices are on the rise and supply is short.

The plant will cost $700 million, and Sempra expects to start construction by the end of March 2004. If all goes according to plan, the LNG plant will begin operations in 2007 and convert 1.5 billion cubic feet of LNG per day to gas.

Sempra is also trying to build a LNG plant in Ensenada, Mexico.

Sempra must still receive permission from the Army Corps of Engineers and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality before beginning construction.
