Silicon Valley Utility to Build Third Plant
LCG, Sept. 15, 2003--A proposed power plant with a capacity of 150 megawatts was granted approval by the California Energy Commission, and may go online in the Silicon Valley town of Santa Clara in 2004.The plant will be built by Silicon Valley Power, a municipal utility that first filed an application two years ago. The site of the plant would be in an industrial area of less than 3 acres, south of Highway 101.Silicon Valley Power customers have not had a rate increase for the past decade, nor should they expect one. Supply from the new plant, which is the third to be built by the utility, will make up for the expiration of a long-term contract with the Western Area Power Administration. Rates are currently 40 percent below those in surrounding towns.
