Natural Gas and Heating Oil Price Forecast Released
LCG, Oct. 8, 2003--The Department of Energy has forecast that the wholesale cost of natural gas will be 9 percent higher during the upcoming winter relative to the previous winter, roughly double prices seen several years ago.Supplies are predicted to be tight, even if temperatures are in the normal range. If the need for natural gas and heating oil for residential use is higher due to unusually cold temperatures, the cost of heating homes could rise by 22 percent over the cost last year.Guy Caruso, who heads the Energy Information Administration (EIA) within the Department of Energy, said the forecast EIA released took into account tight supplies of gas and heating oil, as well as crude oil and petroleum products generally. Caruso told the Associated Press, "There's not a lot of cushion if something goes wrong."
