British Power Prices May Lead to New Plants

LCG, Nov. 7, 2003--New gas-fired power plants may be built in Britain if power prices rise further, according to the chief executive of Scottish & Southern Energy, Ian Marchant, who spoke with the Financial Times this week.

Marchant said that the company is analyzing the possible financial results from building the plants, but that the power prices do not quite justify building yet. The two changes that might spur new projects are a rise in power prices of £2 to £3 or lower gas prices. The chief executive also said that Scottish & Southern might bid for regional gas transmission networks owned by National Grid Transco, if bids were to be solicited.
