GE Introduces Most Efficient Turbine to Date

LCG, Dec. 10, 2003--A gas turbine that would surpass all existing simple-cycle turbines in efficiency was formally introduced today by GE at the Power-Gen International conference in Las Vegas.

The LMS100 is a 100-megawatt turbine that will undergo development testing in May 2004, and is aimed at the peak and mid-range markets. It is novel, GE announced, in that it achieves efficiency of 46 percent by including components from GE Power Systems' heavy-duty frame gas turbines and GE Aircraft Engines' aeroderivative gas turbines.

"This program is a first for GE in that not only are multiple businesses providing development expertise, but they are also designing, manufacturing, sourcing, assembling and testing the product," the president and CEO of GE Aircraft Engines, David Calhoun, said.

Although the LMS100 is a simple-cycle turbine, it claims efficiency of 40% at 50% of its capacity, indicating better efficiency than some turbines realize at full output.
