Progress Energy Declares New Facilities Operational

LCG, June 2, 2003--Sunday marked the official start of operations for two new power plants constructed by Progress Energy, and located in Georgia and North Carolina.

The Rowan County Energy Complex, in Rowan County, NC, is a combined-cycle plant rated at 925 megawatts. Its three simple-cycle turbines, which account for 459 megawatts, began producing power one year ago. The Washington County Energy Complex consists of four combustion turbines of 150 megawatts each. It and the Rowan plant run on natural gas.

"We are very pleased with the support we have received from the people of Sandersville and Salisbury throughout construction. We are proud to be part of both of these communities, and to be adding efficient energy resources for these two regions," said Joel Kamya, a vice president for Progress Energy's Plant Construction unit. Progress Energy owns 23,000 megawatts of power production capability, and owns electric power utilities in the Carolinas and Florida. It also is engaged in unregulated power sales and marketing, as well as natural gas drilling.
