LCG, June 3, 2003-French workers went on a 24-hour strike Tuesday, reducing electricity output by 6.4 percent.According to the CGT union, output was decreased by as much as 7,300 megawatts. Exports of electricity were reduced by more than 5,000 megawatts. The strike had an effect on 6 of 19 French nuclear plants, as weland hampered operations at fossil fuel-powered plants. France gets 80 percent of its total power from nuclear-based generation.Other union officials said the output would have been more dramatically reduced had several nuclear stations not increased production to prevent blackouts.Workers are striking because of pending pension reforms and the privatization of Electricite de France and Gaz de France.
