Outage Follows Training Mishap in Sacramento County
LCG, Aug. 13, 2003--Had it been an actual emergency, a power outage affecting approximately 70,000 residences and companies of Sacramento County Tuesday morning would likely have occurred in much the same way as it did, following an accidental launch of a computer program that allows demand to be shed when supplies are tight.Four employees were being trained on computer systems when one triggered a program that caused outages of about 10 minutes for some customers, although others present in the control room were able to respond to the situation nearly immediately. Some customers had power restored in about three minutes.Approximately 15 percent of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District's customers had power outages stemming from the accident. The utility said that no disciplinary action would be taken in connection with the incident.
