Gas Futures Trading Being Investigated by CFTC

LCG, Jan. 12, 2004--An increase in the price of natural gas futures of 48 percent on the New York Mercantile Exchange, as well as increased market volatility, has prompted the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to subpoena telephone records of firms involved in the market.

Storage levels of natural gas are normal, while temperatures have recently hit record lows in the Eastern U.s. Senators Joseph Liberman, D-Conn., and Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, have both drawn attention to the increase in natural gas prices that has occurred starting after Thanksgiving of last year. Lieberman requested that the CFTC investigate the possibility of market manipulation.

All firms trading in gas futures on the Nymex are effectively subject to the investigation, as the telephone records covering communications between traders are handled by a single company, Syntegra, which is a unit of BT Group PLC.

A spokeswoman for Nymex, Nachamah Jacobovits, was quoted by Dow Jones Newswires as saying, "Nymex is scrutinizing the market with a fine-toothed comb and monitoring because of the extreme volatility. We feel strongly that our systems are designed to handle extreme situations, but that includes scrutiny during times of extreme volatility."
