Wisconsin Could Revoke Ban on New Nuclear Generation
LCG, Feb. 11, 2004--A committee within the Wisconsin state Assembly has voted in favor of a bill that would remove a moratorium that for 21 years has prevented nuclear power plants from being built in the state. In order for such plants to be built, a permanent disposal site would need to be available, such as has been planned at Nevada's Yucca Mountain. Wisconsin legislators do not expect that if the Assembly overturns the ban, plants would be built soon, even in the next few years. Rep. Michael Huebsch, R-West Salem, who submitted the bill to the Energy and Utilities Committee, however, told The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, "We need to anticipate that [the moratorium] is going to go and get nuclear back on the table."The passage of the bill in committee by a 9-3 vote has led supporters to suggest that the full Assembly could pass it. Those opposed to lifting the ban believe that fossil fuels and renewable energy sources should provide for future power needs.
