Construction Begins on 500 MW NYC Plant

LCG, Apr. 19, 2004--Construction of a new 500-megawatt power plant will begin immediately, according to Astoria Energy, an investor group that is undertaking the gas-fired, combined-cycle project in New York City.

The plant will be the largest constructed in the city for the past 25 years, and is expected to be completed by April 2006. The 500 megawatts of capacity is only the first phase of an approved 1,000-megawatt facility. In addition to running on natural gas, the plant will be permitted to switch to fuel oil for as many as 720 hours per year (equivalent to 30 days).

Output of the plant was secured under a 10-year contract signed by the owners with a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison Inc. that provides power and gas to the city.
