Chinese Officials to Boost Use of Renewables

LCG, May 27, 2004--The Chinese national government is seriously considering a law that would require increased use of renewable energy sources, such that renewables would provide 10% of electric power output by 2020, Dow Jones Newswires reports.

The law is now in draft form and being developed by two separate committees. According to Li Junfengand, a researcher at the Energy Research Institute, an arm of the National Development and Reform Commission, the law would force regional electric utilities to obtain minimum amounts of solar and wind power for their power grids. The draft forms of legislation are expected to be submitted to the National People's Congress before the end of the year.

At present, all forms of renewable energy in China that are used for electric power and other energy output together do not total 1%, relative to all forms of energy that are consumed. The law under consideration would require planning for new electric investments to account for renewable energy targets.
