California Energy Commission Approves New Project
LCG, June 18, 2004--The California Energy Commission approved on Wednesday the 1,120 MW, natural gas-fired Tesla Power Plant Project, one of the largest new power plants to be built in California in years. The plant is planned to be built in Northern California near Tracy by Midway Power, a subsidiary of the FPL Group/FPL Energy. This project will be a significant increase of FPL Energy's investment in California, as FPL Energy has financial interests in roughly 1,800 MW of capacity (largely wind) in California. The company is looking for a buyer of the power, and a groundbreaking date is not yet set. The project was approved on a 4-0 vote. Since California deregulated its electricity system in 1996, the California Energy Commission has approved 49 power plants totaling 20,140 MW. Only 24 of those plants, with a capacity of 8,311 MW, are now operating. "In 2006 and beyond, we're going to need more new generation to keep an adequate surplus to avoid rolling blackouts, so this will help toward that goal," said California Energy Commission spokesman Chris Davis.
