Faster-than-Expected Data Center Load Growth May Cause Increased Regional Short-term Fossil Fuel Generation and Wholesale Electricity Prices

LCG, March 18, 2026--The EIA released a new "In-depth Analysis" of the potential impact of faster-than-expected near-term growth in data center power demand on power generation and wholesale prices on March 12. The analysis models the lower 48 states through 2027 and compares results to its base case scenario. Key takeaway from this sensitivity analysis is the potential increase in fossil fuels in some regions and potentially a significant increase in wholesale prices in ERCOT.

MidAmerica Wind Projects Spurred Forward by PTC

LCG, September 30, 2004--MidAmerica Energy announced its final plans to proceed with two wind farms in Iowa following the approval of the Production Tax Credit by the House and Senate last week. Each wind farm will include 100 wind turbines, for a combined generating capacity of 310 MW.

One wind farm will be located in Buena Vista and Sac Counties. Initial construction efforts have begun, with the installation of the 1.5-MW turbines to be completed by the end of the year. The other wind farm will be located in Wright and Hamilton Counties, and the installation of the turbines is planned for next spring.

The Production Tax Credit, which provides for 1.5 cents for each kilowatt-hour of electricity produced, had expired at the end of last year. When the credit expired, the financial viability of wind projects was significantly reduced, and many projects were put on hold. The new legislation is expected to be signed by President Bush shortly and will extend the tax credit retroactively from January 1, 2004 through December 31, 2005.
