NSTAR Transmission Upgrade Receives Tentative Approval

LCG, December 28, 2004--The Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board tentatively approved a proposal by NSTAR to construct a new, 345-kV electric transmission line designed to improve system reliability and capacity between generation facilities located in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and loads in northeastern Massachusetts and the Greater Boston area.

The new, 18-mile, underground transmission line will extend from Stoughton to Boston and is estimated to cost $217 million. The load area is now served by a single 345-kV line from the north, plus several low voltage lines.

The full Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board will vote on the draft decision January 13. Project construction is planned to commence in early 2005, with the line in service by summer of 2006.
