Genesee 3 Coal Unit Achieves Commercial Operations
LCG, March 2, 2005--EPCOR Utilities Inc. and TransAlta Corporation announced that the new, 450-MW Genesee 3 unit is operational effective today. The new unit, G3, employs advanced technologies, including supercritical combustion and emission controls, and is described by its owners as the most advanced coal plant ever built in Canada.G3 is a joint venture between EPCOR and Transalta. In January 2003, TransAlta acquired a 50 per cent interest in EPCOR's G3 project. TransAlta's share of the project is estimated to cost $379 million. EPCOR led the construction and will operate G3 along with the existing units 1 and 2, which are located about 30 miles southwest of Edmonton. The generating station is located adjacent to the fuel source, the Genesee coal mine. With the supercritical boiler, G3 operates at higher temperatures and steam pressures to achieve a more energy efficient process with lower emissions as well. The unit is capable of operating with a minimum net output of 176 MW.Last December, Transalta announced that it would amend its plans to contruct the 900-MW, Centennial coal plant with a smaller, 450-MW plant that is based upon the supercritical design used for G3. The estimated cost for the revised Centennial 1 project, located about 40 miles west of Edmonton at its Keephills facility, is $750 million.
