LCG, February 20, 2026--The EIA today issued an "in-brief analysis" that estimates U.S. power plant developers and operators plan to complete a record installation of 86 GW of new, utility-scale electric generating capacity that is connected to the U.S. power grid in 2026. Last year, 53 GW of new capacity was added to the grid, which was the largest capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Thus the estimate of 86 GW of new capacity in 2026 is a whopping 33 GW greater than the year prior. It should be noted that over 20 GW of the 86 GW of new capacity this year is estimated to be completed in December.

NRC Renews License for Dry-Cask Spent Fuel at Surry Station
LCG, March 3, 2005--The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has renewed Dominion Generation's license for its dry-cask independent spent fuel storage installation at the Surry nuclear power plant located near Surry, Virginia. The renewal is exceptional in that it marks the first time that the NRC has renewed a license for a dry-cask spent nuclear fuel storage facility. Furthermore, the 40-year term of the renewal for spent fuel storage facilities represents an exemption from the NRC regulations that specify a 20-year license term. The NRC stated that the exemption is allowed for in that dry casks are an interim storage solution until a more permanent solution is available. The renewal includes strict terms with respect to inspections and monitoring the aging and integrity of the casks. The current operating licenses for the two reactors extend through 2032 and 2033, respectively.
