Faster-than-Expected Data Center Load Growth May Cause Increased Regional Short-term Fossil Fuel Generation and Wholesale Electricity Prices

LCG, March 18, 2026--The EIA released a new "In-depth Analysis" of the potential impact of faster-than-expected near-term growth in data center power demand on power generation and wholesale prices on March 12. The analysis models the lower 48 states through 2027 and compares results to its base case scenario. Key takeaway from this sensitivity analysis is the potential increase in fossil fuels in some regions and potentially a significant increase in wholesale prices in ERCOT.

Contruction of Palomar Energy Project Approaches Midway Point

LCG, May 5, 2005--Construction on the Palomar Energy Project, a 550-MW power plant located in Escondido, California, is now about 45 percent complete. The gas-fired plant is expected to be up and running in the summer of 2006.

Palomar Energy LLC, a subsidiary of Sempra Energy Resources, is building the plant. SDG&E, a regulated utility and subsidiary of Sempra Energy, will purchase and operate the plant upon completion.

The natural gas-fired, combined cycle plant includes two combustion turbine-generators equipped with dry low combustors and evaporative inlet air coolers, two heat recovery steam generators equipped with duct burners, a steam turbine-generator and associated auxiliary systems and equipment. The city's sewage treatment plant will supply all of the 3 million gallons per day of reclaimed water used by the generating station. The project includes a new 230 kV switchyard connecting with an existing SDG&E electric transmission line located immediately adjacent to the project site.
