Google and AES Sign Agreements for Co-Located Generation and Data Center in Texas

LCG, February 24, 2026--The AES Corporation (AES) and Google today announced agreements for clean power generation that will be co-located with a new Google data center in Wilbarger County, Texas. The agreements include a 20-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) for co-located power generation. These coordinated energy projects and powered land will enable Google to rapidly expand its operations to meet demand for core services, while AES will expand its power generation portfolio.

GE Submits ESBWR Nuclear Design Application to NRC

LCG, August 31, 2005--GE Energy submitted its Design Certification application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for its economic simplified boiling water reactor (ESBWR). GE anticipates the Final Design Approval toward the end of 2006 and that it will receive Design Certification immediately thereafter.

The ESBR is a 1,500-MW design that incorporates passive safety features that rely upon natural forces, such as gravity, in order to reduce reliance on active, mechanical systems, like pumps and valves.

GE Energy, as well as the other reactor vendor, Westinghouse Electric, are participants in NuStart Energy, a consortium founded in 2004 to support the development of new nuclear power stations. Other participants include Exelon, Entergy, Southern Company, Constellation, Duke Energy, the Tennessee Valley Authority, Progress Energy, Florida Power & Light, and EDF International.

In May, NuStart's members identified six sites to focus their efforts to develop new nuclear plants. The six finalist sites are: Bellefonte Nuclear Plant, Alabama, owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA); Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, Mississippi, owned by Entergy Nuclear; River Bend Nuclear Station, Louisiana, owned by Entergy Nuclear; Savannah River Site, South Carolina, a Department of Energy facility; Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Maryland, owned by Constellation Energy; and Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, New York, owned by Constellation Energy.

There are a number of other nuclear development projects in the United States. Progress Energy notified the NRC this week that it is developing plans that may result in its submittal of a combined construction and operating license (COL) for a new nuclear power plant and that it expects to select a potential site and reactor vendor by the end of 2005. Southern Nuclear Operating Company announced on August 22 that it has selected its Vogtle Nuclear Station in Georgia for consideration as a site for new nuclear units. SCANA, the parent company of South Carolina Electric and Gas Co., and Santee Cooper announced last week that they are considering extending an existing nuclear generation joint ownership agreement so that they can study construction of a new nuclear generation facility. (The two companies currently co-own the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station near Jenkinsville, South Carolina.) Finally, Duke announced in May that it was considering the development of a new nuclear power plant as well.

Given timely approval of the ESBWR application by the NRC, GE Energy estimates that construction of an ESBWR could start in 2010, with commercial operations commencing in 2014.
