Progress Energy Considers New Nuclear Plant in Florida

LCG, October 6, 2005--Progress Energy yesterday announced that it may develop another nuclear power plant in Florida. Progress Energy plans to select a site and design by the end of this year. Sites in Polk, Seminole, Osceola and Highlands counties are under consideration. Progress Energy currently operates the Crystal River nuclear generating plant, which commenced operations in 1977.

Progress Energy notified the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on August 29, 2005 that it is developing plans that may result in its submittal of a combined construction and operating license (COL) for a new nuclear power plant. At that time, Progress Energy also notified the NRC that it expects to select a potential site and reactor vendor by the end of 2005.

The application for the combined COL may be filed in early 2008, according to Progress. Given timely approval by the NRC, construction could commence in 2010, with commercial operation in about 2015.

Progress Energy is a participant in NuStart Energy Development, LLC, a consortium founded in 2004 to support the development of new nuclear power stations. Other participants include Exelon, Entergy, Southern Company, Constellation, Duke Energy, the Tennessee Valley Authority, Florida Power & Light, EDF International, and the two reactor vendors, GE and Westinghouse Electric.
