Entergy Pursues License Extensions for Yankee and Pilgrim Reactors
LCG, December 1, 2005--Entergy notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) yesterday that it plans to submit license renewal applications for the Pilgrim and Vermont Yankee Power Stations in late January of next year. If approved, the renewals would extend the operating licenses by 20 years. Entergy plans to request that the applications be reviewed together by one review team to achieve greater review efficiency. Both nuclear power stations incorporate similar designs that utilize the General Electric Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) and both stations began operations in the early seventies. Pilgrim commenced commercial operations in December 1972, and its license expiration date is June 8, 2012. Vermont Yankee began commercial operations in November 1972, and its license expiration date is March 21, 2012.The 670-MW Pilgrim plant is located in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and the 535-MW Vermont Yankee plant is located near Vernon, Vermont. Together, the two plants deliver a significant quantity of power without emitting any greenhouse gases.
