Press Release

UPLAN 7.0 for Dispatch-Based Unit Commitment and Integrated Market Simulation

LCG Consulting, Los Altos, California, April 15, 2004 – LCG is pleased to announce the release of UPLAN 7.0, an unprecedented integrated generation and transmission electricity market modeling system offering today’s most realistic combination of financial plus physical electricity network simulation. “UPLAN 7.0 preserves the functionality of its popular predecessors1, but now operates in a more efficient and powerful MS SQL Server environment,” says Sidart Deb, the chief architect of the new system. “User interfaces have been completely redesigned using the latest technologies to rapidly view, manipulate and manage the large, complex data sets necessary for realistic market simulation and analysis.”

UPLAN integrates an electricity market simulation with a full AC or DC network transmission model, projects hourly Locational Market Prices (LMP), and is fully compliant with FERC Standard Market Design. Consistent with market design trends, it performs co-optimization of energy and ancillary service procurement based on opportunity costs and elimination of inter-commodity arbitrage. UPLAN’s full-fledged Security Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC) and Economic Dispatch (SCED), including congestion management, can utilize extensive contingency sets as needed for realism. UPLAN has been used to accurately simulate and analyze such regional markets as PJM, New York, New England, MISO, ERCOT2 and California3. The day-ahead market is simulated by optimizing the commitment of resources for energy and all ancillary services taking into account inter- and intra-regional transmission constraints, incorporating optimal power flow and any resource scheduling constraints or requirements. Committed resources are then dispatched using optimal power flow (OPF) to emulate real-time SCED.

Data handling in UPLAN 7.0 is conveniently addressed via “scenario” based storage, freeing the user from many laborious data management tasks and minimizing the risk of overwriting or accidentally deleting data. “UPLAN 7.0 offers an integrated environment to view or modify all input data, with both standard and customized reporting. Users will be pleased with its intuitive interfaces that contain countless time saving features, including sorting, grouping, filtering, data validation, seamless Excel integration and custom charting,” asserted Sidart.
