Construction Begins on the International Power Line

LCG, November 29, 2006--The presidents of NB Power and Bangor Hydro were present yesterday for the ceremony near the Point Lepreau nuclear power station to initiate construction of the new, 345 kV electric International Power Line (IPL). The new electric transmission line will extend about 59 miles from Point Lepreau to the New England grid near Woodland, Maine. The new line is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2007.

The project goal is to improve both grid reliability and access to markets for generators. NB Power plans substantial improvements to the existing Point Lepreau nuclear power plant, and the new transmission line will significantly increase export capacity to Maine.

Last month, the formal groundbreaking ceremony for the Northeast Reliability Interconnect (NRI) Project, which will connect to the new IPL, was held. The NRI will be a 345 kV electric transmission line that will extend 85 miles from Orrington, Maine to the St. Croix River near Baileyville, Maine. The NRI is also scheduled to be operational by the end of 2007.
