LCG, April 13, 2026--The EIA today released an "In-brief Analysis" of U.S. coal-fired generating capacity retirements in 2025. A highlight of the analysis is that, during 2025, the electric power sector retired 2.6 GW of coal-fired generating capacity at four power plants, which is (i) the least since 2010 and (ii) 5.9 GW less than the planned retirement of 8.5 GW at the beginning of 2025.

LCG, April 10, 2026--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced yesterday a rule proposing several revisions to the federal regulations governing the disposal of coal combustion residuals (CCR) and the beneficial use of CCR. The EPA designed the rule to encourage resource recovery, allow for site-specific considerations in permitting, and provide regulatory relief while continuing to protect human health and the environment. The EPA will be accepting comments on the rule for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, and it will also hold an online public hearing on the rule.

Innovative UPLAN 7.5 Released, Most Advanced Electricity Modeling System Ever Available
Los Altos, California – December 8, 2006: LCG Consulting proudly announces the release of its latest electricity market modeling system, UPLAN 7.5.
This innovative software suite provides unsurpassed detail and realism in a highly user-friendly environment. “This is – without a doubt – the most advanced and easiest to use electricity modeling system ever released,” proclaimed Sidart Deb, the chief architect of UPLAN 7.5.
UPLAN integrates an electricity market simulation with a full AC or DC network transmission model, projects hourly Locational Market Prices (LMP), and is fully compliant with FERC Standard Market Design. Consistent with market design trends, it performs co-optimization of energy and ancillary service procurement based on opportunity costs and elimination of inter-commodity arbitrage.
UPLAN’s full-fledged Security Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC) and Security Constrained Economic Dispatch (SCED), including congestion management, can utilize extensive contingency sets for absolute realism. In fact, UPLAN has been successfully utilized to accurately simulate and analyze numerous regional markets, including California, New York, New England, the Pennsylvania Jersey Maryland (PJM) Interconnection, the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator (MISO), and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).
The day-ahead market is simulated in UPLAN by optimizing the commitment of resources for energy and all ancillary services, as well as taking into account both inter-regional and intra-regional transmission constraints, and incorporating optimal power flow (OPF) and resource scheduling constraints. Committed resources are then dispatched using OPF to emulate real-time SCED.
UPLAN 7.5 contains the following exciting new features:
- Ancillary Service Quantities
- Report Comparisons
- Complex Startup Profiles
- Hourly Energy Percentages for Wind Profiles
- Ability to Import Multiple Hourly Profiles From .csv
- Marginal Generator Reports
- Load Weighted Average Price Reports
- Enhanced Combined Cycle Logic
- 64-bit Technology
- Database Management Console
- Power-flow Export
“This latest version of UPLAN exceeds my wildest dreams,” declared Dr. Rajat Deb, the original architect of the model. “The advanced features contained in this software package could not have even been imagined a few years ago, much less when we first created the groundbreaking model.” For further information, or to order your very own copy of UPLAN 7.5, please contact LCG Consulting at 650-962-9670, or e-mail at: info@energyonline.com
