FPL's New Nuclear Reactors Gain Momentum
LCG, August 16, 2007--FPL Group Inc. (FPL) announced yesterday that it plans to add two nuclear reactors at its existing Turkey Point nuclear power plant in Florida by 2020 to meet the growing demand for electricity in Florida. The new reactors would add 3,000 MW of base-load, electric generating capacity that is free of carbon emissions.
FPL announced its plans at a Florida Public Service Commission workshop on future energy needs. In addition, FPL stated that it plans to increase electric generating capacity at the existing St. Lucie nuclear power plant and at Turkey Point by a total of 400 MW. The increase is scheduled by 2012, given timely regulatory approvals.
The company stated that it plans to file proposals supporting the increase in capacity of the existing facilities and the addition of two nuclear reactors before October. The company clarified that no decision to build new reactors has been made at this time and that such a decision is unlikely for at least a year.
FPL is not alone in planning new nuclear reactors. In December of 2006, Progress Energy Florida selected a site in Levy County, Florida about eight miles north of its existing Crystal River Energy Complex for the possible construction of a new nuclear power plant. Furthermore, Progress Energy Florida last month announced that Westinghouse Electric Co.'s AP1000 was selected for nuclear reactor additions in Florida. The company has stated that it plans to file a need case with the Florida Public Service Commission in early 2008. Assuming the decision is to proceed, construction could begin in 2012, with commercial operation scheduled for 2016, according to Progress.
