Peabody Issues Notice to Proceed with Prairie State Energy Campus
LCG, October 2, 2007--Peabody Energy announced yesterday that the Prairie State Energy Campus equity partners have completed financial closing and issued the notice to proceed to construct the planned coal-fired electric generating station in Washington County, Illinois.
The facility will include two, 800-MW, supercritical units that are scheduled to commence commercial operations in 2011 and 2012. The power plant will be located adjacent to the Lively Grove Coal Mine. The estimated cost of the Prairie State Energy Campus is $2.9 billion.
The Prairie State Energy Campus will provide base-load power to a number of public power entities in the region. The Prairie State partner group includes American Municipal Power-Ohio; Illinois Municipal Electric Agency; Indiana Municipal Power Agency; Kentucky Municipal Power Agency; Missouri Joint Municipal Electric Utility Commission; Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency; Prairie Power, Inc.; and Southern Illinois Power Cooperative.
According to Peabody Energy, the partners have committed to purchasing nearly 1,435 MW or about ninety percent of the project's output, and discussions are on-going with the existing partner group to finalize ownership of the few remaining shares. Peabody expects to retain a five percent ownership position in the project.
In late August, a three-judge panel from the Seventh Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals affirmed the air permit for the Prairie State Energy Campus.
