Calpine and ExxonMobil Sign CO2 Transportation and Storage Agreement for CCS Project in Texas

LCG, April 24, 2025--Exxon Mobil Corporation (ExxonMobil) announced yesterday an agreement with Calpine Corporation (Calpine) to transport and permanently store up to 2 million metric tons per annum (MTA) of CO2 from Calpine’s Baytown Energy Center, a natural gas-fired facility located near Houston, Texas. This is part of Calpine’s Baytown Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project that is designed to add CCS for the facility’s CO2 emissions. Russia Plans Nuclear Power Station in Kaliningrad

LCG, August 28, 2008--Rosatom Nuclear Energy State Corporation (Rosatom) announced that it has executed a decree to construct a nuclear power plant in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, located on the coast of the Baltic Sea between Poland and Lithuania.

The planned nuclear station will include two nuclear reactors, each with a capacity of 1,200 MW. The design is scheduled to be completed before 2010, with operation of the first unit planned in 2015. The facility design will be completed by St. Petersburg's Atomenergoproyekt Institute, and Energoatom will be responsible for the construction. Both of these entities are state enterprises of Russia.

The plans were announced in April of this year. The plant capacity allows for significant exports from Kaliningrad. A spokesperson for Rosatom stated that the company was prepared to allow up to 49 percent of the plant to be held by foreign investors.

The ice-free port of Kaliningrad previously was a base for the Soviet Baltic fleet, with 200,000 to 500,000 Soviet soldiers stationed in the area.
