NRC Renews Operating License for Wolf Creek Generating Station in Kansas
LCG, November 21, 2008--The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced yesterday that it approved the renewal of the Wolf Creek Generating Station in Kansas. With the 20-year extension, the nuclear facility is licensed to operate until March 11, 2045. The power plant is owned by Kansas City Power & Light (47 percent), Westar Energy, Inc. (47 percent) and Kansas Electric Power Cooperative, Inc. (6 percent).
The plant operator, Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation, filed its license renewal application in September 2006. The NRC staff determined there are no environmental impacts and there are no safety concerns that would preclude renewal of the license. In addition, the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards, which is an independent body of technical experts that advises the NRC, submitted its recommendation that the license renewal application for Wolf Creek should be approved.
