B&W and TVA Purse New Nuclear Reactor Design

LCG, June 11, 2009--The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) announced yesterday its plans to develop a new, scalable nuclear reactor. B&W has notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) that it intends to submit an application for design certification of the B&W mPower reactor in 2011.

B&W received a Letter of Intent from Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to start evaluating sites to identify a potential lead plant site. B&W, TVA and a consortium of regional municipal and cooperative utilities executed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore the construction of a fleet of B&W mPower reactors to meet the consortium's need to diversify its power generation assets.

The mPower reactor design is a passively safe Advanced Light Water Reactor (ALWR) that includes an underground containment design to accommodate storage of used fuel for the planned 60-year life of the reactor. The design is scalable in power increments of 125 MW and provides for a five-year operating cycle without refueling.

B&W create a new business unit, B&W Modular Nuclear Energy, LLC, to lead the development of mPower reactor projects. The reactor will be manufactured at existing B&W facilities in North America.
