New York Poised to Close Last Coal-fire Power Plant

LCG, December 4, 2019--The last operating coal-fired power plant in New York is moving toward closure shortly. Last month, Somerset Operating Company, a subsidiary of Riesling Power LLC, submitted a request to the New York State Public Service Commission (NYSPSC) to waive the state's required, 180-day notice to close the Somerset Station, allowing the facility to be retired on February 15, 2020. Closure is contingent on approvals by both NYSPSC and the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), which will evaluate if it will cause an adverse effect on grid reliability.

Tucson Electric Power Pursues New Solar Projects

LCG, September 17, 2009--Tucson Electric Power (TEP) executed power purchaseagreements (PPA's) for the electric output from a 25-MW, photovoltaic (PV) solar project and a 5-MW, concentrating solar power (CSP) project that are scheduled to be operational by January 2012.

TEP will submit the PPA's to the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) for approval. In November 2006, the ACC adopted a Renewable Energy Standard (RES) that directs utilities to increase renewable energy resources, with a target to provide 15 percent of their power with renewables by the year 2025.

The 25-MW, solar PV project will be owned and operated by Fotowatio Renewable Ventures. The project will employ solar panels that track the sun by rotating along a single axis.
The 5-MW, CSP project will rely upon mirrored, parabolic troughs that focus the sun's energy on tubes to heat a liquid for the ultimate use of drivnig a turbine to generate power. The 5-MW project will also utilize the Bell Energy Storage Technology
(BEST) system that will enable energy to be stored for several hours to enable - to some extent - the power to be generated at a more optimal time. Bell Independent Power Corp. (Bell IPC) will develop, own and operate the CSP plant.
