Southern Power to Acquire Biomass Project in Texas
LCG, October 12, 2009--Southern Power announced on Friday that it will acquire Nacogdoches Power, LLC and a planned, 100-MW power plant to be fueled with biomass from American Renewables, LLC. Construction on the project, located in east Texas in Nacogdoches County, is planned to commence this fall. Commercial operation is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2012.
When completed, the facility will burn forest residues, wood processing residues and clean municipal wood wasted in a fluidized boiler to generate steam that will drive a steam turbine to generate electricity. The annual fuel required will be approximately one million tons, which is expected to be transported to the plant from with a 75-mile radius of the project site.
Power generated from the electric generating facility is committed through a 20-year, power purchase agreement (PPA) with Austin Energy, the municipal utility of Austin, Texas.
Southern Power is a subsidiary of Southern Company that acquires, builds, manages and owns wholesale generation assets. The acquisition of Nacogdoches Power, LLC is a new venture for Southern Power into biomass fuels, as well as into the State of Texas. Southern Power currently owns and operates more than 7,700 MW of natural gas-fueled generation assets in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina.
American Renewables brings together the project development, operations, energy investment and asset management skills of its three partners: BayCorp Holdings, Energy Management, Inc. and Tyr Energy. American Renewables is also developing similar, 100-MW biomass projects in north Florida.
